Clara Tilling is a teenager who is facing some issues. She is 15 and a half years old. Clara seems to lack attention from her mother, or she seems like she needs a mother figure in her life. She has a lot of built up emotions, and it’s expressed clearly when her mom and Stan leave the house after reading the heads letter. (P. 55, ll. 30) ‘’Clara went on sitting at the table. She ate a piece of toast and drank her coffee. Her mother and Stan bustled about collecting her purse and his jacket and banged out of the house, shouting goodbye. The front gate clicked, the car door slammed, and then Clara began to cry, the tears dripping from her chin on to her folded arms and her face screwed up like a small child’s’’. She quite clearly didn’t get the reaction she hoped to get, from pulling such a stunt at school. I think her mother and Stan act more like friends to Clara, than parents, and it is not healthy for a 15 and a half years old girl going through puberty.

Clara’s mother seems much more like a friend than a mother. When her daughter takes off all her clothes at school and walks through the school naked, all she does is laugh at it, instead of offering her to help her, or even ask if something is wrong. (P. 54, ll. 25) ‘’She opened the Head’s letter and began to read. First she stared at it with a puzzled look and then she began to laugh.’’ She is much more obsessed with her work than she cares about her daughter. She doesn’t check to see if her daughter is okay, she just stresses over she is late for work and then leaves. She works part-time as a dentist’s receptionist, and she has what they call ‘’flexible hours’’, which basically means she works when it suits her
