Analyse af Will Selfs novelle 'iAnna'

Since the start of the millennium, there number of cell phones has grown exponentially. The first public iPhone saw the light of day on the 29th of June 2007. The influence that smart-phones have had on us is not easy to define, but we know that these phones have had a lot of influence. If you just take a brief look at the street, you see youngsters with their phones everywhere. What are the consequences of this mad smartphone addiction? The short story, “iAnna”, describes a woman so addicted to this culture that she has gone mental.

Will Self wrote the short story in 2014. It is about a psychiatrist who calls a former psychiatrist for help. There is a patient with more abnormal symptoms than usual. The patient is acting like the world is an iPad. The old former psychiatrist and the younger one are very different in all ways. Eventually, the former psychiatrist finds a possible way to cure the patient.

The story is in a chronological timeline. Will Self wrote the short story from an outer point of view, written in third person and past tense. The narrator is unknown, is not omniscient, and does not participate in the story. The narrator tells the story directly from his point of view. The language in the short story is quite strange and complicated. The sentences are long and difficult to read.
