How can we define evil? Is there any correct definition of evil? Evil can mean many things and people can commit evil in many ways. For example, if you do something which is morally wrong, if you harm someone or are cruel because you just want to satisfy yourself. The short story ‘’The Tell-Tale Heart’’ by Edgar Allan Poe is a good example of immoral evil, because the main character commits murder and he even feels good about it. Even though he knows he has done something immoral. This assignment will analyze the short story ‘’The Tell-Tale Heart’’ with focus on the main character, structure, style and tone. Furthermore, it includes a discussion of use of symbolism, themes, moral and perspective of elements in the story that can be relevant for our lives and our society today.
The short story opens in the first person voice of the narrator, admitting that he has been very nervous’ ‘True! --nervous I had bee and I am….’’ He denied his madness, by saying that his hearing is keen now and he that he can relate to the story calmly. Here, the narrator wants to reassure his reader that he loved the old man with whom he lived although he killed him, and that the reason for the murder wasn’t because he wanted the old man’s gold. This is shown in the text’ ‘For his gold I had no desire’’. He starts explaining how he made up his mind to commit the murder, with his only motivation being the old man’s ‘’pale blue eye, with a film over it.’’ The reader isn’t exactly told why the old man’s eye offends the narrator or why it makes him nervous.
