The movie is about the lawyer (Martin Vail), a success seeking defence attorney, that, when the beloved archbishop Rushman is killed, decides to take on the case as the defender of the suspect, the young boy Aaron Stampler.
Aaron is an altar boy whom the archbishop has taken of the streets and given him a home.
Police found Aaron running away from the house where the archbishop was stabbed 78 times in the chest and had a message written on him.
Everyone believes that Aaron is responsible for the crime But Martin Vail thinks he can get his client cleared of all charges. He actually thinks that his client is somewhat innocent.
The prosecutor is Martin’s ex-flame Janet Venable. There seems to be some sexual tension between them, which is quite typical for this kind of movie.
After psychological evaluation, Aaron is declared to have a multiple personality disorder. This turns everything around!
Martin Vails then discovers a tape at the crime scene, with Aaron Stampler and two of his friends performing sexual acts under the command of the archbishop. Martin gets someone to deliver the tape to Janet Venable. He knows that if he shows the tape to the jury, they’ll know that he has stolen it from the crime scene.. He also knows Janet well enough to know that she can’t have something like this without showing it to the jury, whether it’ll harm her case or not.
