The story is about nameless person (the narrator) who opens the story by presenting the reader and maintains that he is not mad, but nervous. The narrator has a fear of the man’s pale blue eye. Again he says that he is not crazy. Every night, he went to the old man’s house and secretly when the man was sleeping, observed him. After one week of this supervision the narrator decides, that it was time to kill the old man.
After the narrator had killed the old man, he putted the body underneath the wooden floor. The narrator begins to hear the old man’s heartbeat. He admits, "He can hear all things in the heaven and in the earth”. It is driving him crazy.
The tone in the history is pretty scary; there is not any kind fun. You can really be scared out of our mind, by reading it. The narrator is so pathetic and he seems to understand the feeling of somebody being scared, and that makes him and the story much more terrifying.
Though the whole story we don't know where the narrator is while he is telling the story of the murder of the old man. The story he tells us takes place inside an old house, which is given few details. A neighbour hears one of the old man’s screams. The cops arrive just after the narrator has cut up the body and hidden it. The narrator is calm and cool when the police show up. He shows them around in the house, and then he invites them to stay with him in the man's bedroom. Then the narrator begins to hear the heartbeat, and it is getting louder and louder.
