The story tells us about a boy called/named Nick, his father and his Uncle George. In the beginning of the story two Indians were waiting for Nick and his father. When they arrived they got in the stern of the boat. Nick’s Uncle George sat in the stern of the camp rowboat. They were rowing across the lake in the night to get to an Indian Camp, where a young woman was in labor. She has/had been trying to give birth to her baby for two days. Nick’s father is a doctor and he tries to help the woman who is in a lot of pain. As they arrived to the camp, the Indians followed them to the shanty, where the young woman was. The woman was lying on a wooden bunk and her husband was lying in the upper bunk with a badly hurt foot. Some of the people from the camp are walking out of range from the noises. Nicks father tells him a lot about the procedure. Nick asks his father if he can give the woman something to make her stop screaming, but his father don’t have any anesthetic. Unfortunately, the baby is lying in the opposite position, which forces Nick’s father to perform a Caesarean operation with a jack-knife. Nick is told that he doesn’t have to look at it if he doesn’t want to. But the operation goes well, and Nick’s dad put the placenta into the basin. Then he sews the woman up with tapered gut leaders as that was the only thing available. Nick’s father is very elated at the happy ending, but then he realizes that the father of the newborn child has committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razorblade. Nick wasn’t supposed to see the dead body lying in the bed full of blood, but he happened to see it anyway. Nick asks his dad a lot of questions as they are sitting in the boat heading back home in the early mornings daylight, and at the end he seems sure that he will never die.
