In the beginning we are introduced to Nick, his father and his Uncle George. They are rowing across a lake by two Indians. His father informed Nick, that the reason for their visit to the camp is because of the fact that a woman is sick, and possibly close to death.

They are walking by a road, closely following an Indian, until they finally make it to the shanties. Once they arrived, they are quickly met by the screams of the woman, who was been in labor for two days. The shaman woman of the tribe couldn’t do anything to help her.

The father of Nick informs him that the woman is in labor, and that they will have to perform surgery on her, which makes Nick sterilize his equipment. After some surgical procedures have been done, the woman is finally able to bear birth to a child, which ends up being a boy.

The father asks Nick if he likes being a trainee, and Nick says fine but turns away. Nick says that he wants to see the father of the newborn child, but to his surprise, the father has slit his own throat with a razor. Nick is taken out off the room, but the image of the father lying in his own blood cannot be unseen. The sun is starting to rise once they are on the road again, and Nick finds himself thinking of life and death. He asks his father about how it is to die, and why people would commit suicide. In the end, Nick puts his hand in the water, and he thinks to himself that he will never die.
