It was dark, Nick and his father got in the stern of a boat, while Uncle George was sitting in another rowboat. Nick asked his father where they were going and his father told him they were going to the Indians camp where a lady was very sick.
When they reached land a young Indian led them along a road through the wood. He showed them into the shanty nearest the road. They got into the shanty and saw a young Indian woman lying on a wooden bunk. Her husband was lying in the upper bunk.
Nick’s father told him that the woman was going to have a baby, and what she was going through was called to be in labour.
Shortly after Nick’s father realized that he had to perform a Caesarean operation even though he have no anaesthetic.
When he started to operate Uncle George and three Indian men had to hold the woman still.
Nick was looking away when his father took the placenta and put it into a basin with water.
After the operation Nick’s father is satisfied to have performed a Caesarean operation with a jack-knife and sewed it up with tapered gut leaders.
Uncle George and Nick's father are talking about the father of the baby takes it very quiet, and when they look up to the bunk they find out that he has committed suicide.
