Summary of 'Indian Camp' by Ernest Hemingway

Nick, his dad and his uncle George are rowing across the lake with two Indian men. Nick’s dad is telling him that they’re going to the Indian camp because a woman there is very ill and needs to be taken care of, and to get to the camp they will have to follow the Indian men for a while. Finally they arrive to the camp and from outside they can hear a woman screaming. She is in labor and can’t get enough help from the old woman, that’s why they called Nick’s dad. The Indian woman is laying in the bed, while she’s screaming Nick’s dad tells Nick that the woman is going to have a baby and that he probably will operate her. Nick’s dad is boiling some water to wash his hands in and the equipment he needs. Nick’s dad explains to Nick that the baby is laying in the wrong position so he will operate. He grabs a pocket knife which he uses as a scalpel to cut while all the men holds the woman. The woman gives birth to a boy and Nick’s dad tells Uncle George that he shall take Nick outside while he talks with the woman’s husband, but before he gets to talk with him he cuts himself in his throat and dies.
