The story takes place in Michigan where Nick and his father are summoned to help a woman from an Indian camp that has been in labor for forty-eight hours. Nick´s father takes his brother George along and two Indians who are waiting for them at a lake shore, are supposed to row them to the camp. They sit in the stern of the boat and when they arrive, they walk up from the beach into a dark wood where they can see some shanties. With lanterns they find the right route to the camp and in one of the shanties they discover a young Indian woman who is lying in a bunk. The woman has been trying to have her baby for two days but unfortunately without luck.
It isn’t a good situation, and rather not for her husband who has cut his foot badly with an axe. Someone is supposed to do something and of course Nick´s father who is a doctor knows how to solve the problem. He has no equipment’s and also no kinds of anesthetic so it is a good question how he will make his operation. With a big kettle he warms up water and puts it into a basin. From a handkerchief he takes several things and puts them into the basin which he is boiling.
