It isn’t rare being divorced as you think it is. It is very hard, which side should you choose? Your mother or your dad’s side? You don’t know what to do, it causes a lot of pain because it splits up a family, and confusion because children doesn’t understand relationships. Jennifer Allott’s short story Mid-air, portrayed in the story one of the issues, where she sees it from the child’s view, before the parents gets a divorce.

The short story takes place in a car, and the car drive is from Robin Hood’s bay to York in England. the story is built up as the car drive is split into two parts, and the middle of the story is divided in five flashbacks from the same day or the week before. It is Alex’s flashbacks, and there is a 3rd person narrator with a glimpse to Alex’s thoughts.

Jennifer Allott makes use of the flashbacks as an establishment for the relationship between the characters and as answers, if you have any after you have read the first part of the car ride. All the flashbacks get combined in the end when you know the characters, what their stories is and how their relationship is in the short story.
