The winner of Young People of the Year 2014 is Joel Davis. Joel grew up in a quite poor family in Islington, London. He was born the 17th of October 1995. Joel lived a quite hard life for a long time. As he was growing older his mother started getting sick, so Joel would do his best to help her, whenever she needed it. His mother’s illness would also have effect on him in school. Often Joel would have a hard time reading in class. Eventually his grades were getting lower and he was still having a hard time. There wasn’t really anyone that would help him. His mother was also having a hard time getting all the medical bills paid. His father worked at a restaurant as a waiter. The low income was barely enough to pay for food and rent. Joel was an only child and he knew something had to be done. Joel thought that if he couldn’t do anything to help his mother, the least he could do was try to do better in school and also help others. He didn’t want anyone to go through the same as he did. So he would start concentrating more in class and start taking notes, so he could help tutor others. His main goal was trying to help others with homework, because nobody ever helped him. Joel’s father has always told him “Always do your best to turn the negatives into positives”. And so he did.
