14-year-old Emmet Louis Till was tortured to the point that he was unrecognisable, and afterwards shot dead by a bullet in the head. The reason was a flirt with a young white clerk (Carolyn) at Bryant Grocery and Meat Market. The brutal action took place in Money Mississippi at approximately 2:00 am on August 28. The perpetrators are not known, but Roy, Carolyn’s husband, and his half-brother are suspects. Today, Emmet Till’s mother will have an open casket funeral, for everyone to witness what happened to her son.

Emmet Till was born on July 25, 1941, in Argo, Illinois. Emmett was the only child of Louis and Mamie Till. Emmett never knew his father, who was a soldier in the United States Army.
Three years after Mamie had left Louis, she got a message from the army stating that Louis Till was executed for "wilful misconduct".
Emmett, who went by the nickname Bobo, grew up in a middle class neighbourhood in Chicago's south side. Emmet was described as responsible, funny and infectiously high-spirited child.
Till's death
About two weeks ago Emmett took a life changing decision. He chose to drive to Mississippi with his uncle Mose, who lived there, to see his cousins. On Wednesday, August 24, Till along with his eight cousins, went to Bryant Grocery and Meat market to buy bubble gum and refreshments after a long day of picking cotton.
