Emmett Till is a boy from the city Money, Mississippi. He was 14 years old. He wasn’t civil rights activist. He wasn’t politically active.
Emmet was visiting his great uncle. He should be there over the summer.
People were mad because the law had just ruled that white and black people should go to school together. Violence against black peopled rose very much in these years.
The 24th August, Emmet and some of his friends hang out on the front porch of Bryant’s grocery and Meat market, playing like normal kids. Emmet bragged a little bit about a girlfriend he perhaps had had. Then a white boy challenged Emmet to get a date with a white girl. There was a pretty white girl in the store and he walked into the store to talk to her. When he left the store he turned to the girl and said: “bye baby”, and whistled at her. Three days after the woman in the store’s man and his half brother decided to punish Emmet for being disrespectful to her wife.
The two men kidnapped Emmet and killed him brutally.
They had to stand trial, which surprised many people. Because they were white, it was common that they did not get any penalty for killing a black man.
