Tony “Deep” Wouhra was born in 1942 in British India. His father worked in the military. He came from a wealthy family. When India won its freedom in 1947 he was only five years old, and lived with his grandparents. After India gained its freedom there was a lot of trouble between different groups and religions. Tony, his brother and his grandmother then moved to Delhi, so they could be safe. When he was 19 years old he moved to Britain, to restore his family’s wealth. When he arrived in Britain, he had no job and no money. However, he quickly got a job as a bricklayer, and sooner got a job as a shunter at a railway.
He met a girl who had an aunt who was willing to give him a job as a door to door salesman for her eggs. He then bought a van and drove around selling eggs. In 1967 he opened a shop, and one of his brothers came from India to help him. His company then started to grow, and he moved into the spice and basmati rice market and where he became a huge success. He named his company his East End Foods. In 2006 he employed more than 250 people and had an annual sale of 97m pounds.
