The film is about two sisters, Molly and Daisy and their cousin Gracie. They come from an Aborigine tribe in Australia called Jigalong. They live in peace and freedom, until one day when a man comes to take them to a place called Moore River Native Settlement in spite of their mothers’ big frustration. Moore River is a place, where Aborigine girls learn to speak English and learn about the English culture. The girls must say grace, and they are not allowed to speak their own language. Molly decides that the three girls have to run away. They want to live their old life again, but the Aborigine “tracker” Moodoo and the white men search for them. On their journey back home along the rabbit proof fence, the girls meet some nice people, who gives them clothes and food, but the “tracker” is sometimes very close to them. A rumour tells the girls that their mothers are in a town called Wiluna. Gracie believes it, and she walks towards the town. The oldest girl Molly says instead that she does not believe the rumour, and she continues the same way with her little sister on her back. Gracie ends up by being taken back to Moore River, but the two other girls find their mother, and they live a long life.
