“One Friday Morning" is the title of a short story written by Langston Hughes and was published in 1952. The setting of the short story is in the North of the United States of America. The action only spans over a few days in April and follows the main character, a high-school student.
The story is told in a third-person narration, using the perspective of the main character, Nancy Lee, therefore the story is told from Nancy's point of view. The short story begins directly into the plot, which captures the reader’s attention without providing too much information: (“The thrilling news did not come directly to Nancy Lee, but it came in little indirections that finally added themselves up to one tremendous fact: she had won the prize!”) We discover that Nancy appreciates her high school life and her teachers, and has never felt discriminated in school: (“Nancy Lee sometimes forgot she was colored herself. She liked her classmates and her school. Particularly she liked her art teacher…”) As the anti-climax reveals, the girl has been refused the award, not because of the quality of her work, but because she is colored: (“You are not to receive the scholarship this morning.” Outside in the hall the electric bells announcing the first period rang, loud and interminably long. Miss O’Shay remained silent. To the brown girl there in the chair, the room grew suddenly smaller, smaller, smaller, and there was no air. She could not speak.")
