“One Friday morning” is a short story written by the African American author, Langston Hughes in 1941. It tells us a story of a young, black girl named Nancy Lee stuck in a world characterized by segregation in the early 1940s America. Her and her family had moved from the South to the North, where it is easier living as a black person in hope of having a better future.
Nancy is an excellent artist and even wins a scholarship with a painting illustrating her own interpretation of the American Dream. Filled with joy, Nancy thinks about how she could now get an education and help her family, but her happiness would soon come to an end when the board decides not to give her the award due to the color of her skin.

The settings of this story are very important for understanding the text, its complex of themes and more. Therefore, I will begin with giving an account of this. As said earlier, the story takes place in the beginning of the 1940’s, which is important because even though Nancy Lee was living in the North, there was still segregation between black and white people, and according to history.com, it was still possible to find the so called “Whites only” signs in the North.
