Inequality exists everywhere. It appears in various extents. At all times the discussion about disparity has influenced the public debate. Racism is an enormous conversational topic, that most people associate with slavery and the past, but is racism even a terminated chapter? The American Dream is the belief, that any American citizen regardless of their social class can attain success. It maintains that all humans are born equal with the same opportunities. Unfortunately, the world is filled with injustice, and inequality is inevitable. In the story “One Friday Morning” (1941) by Langston Hughes, the gifted girl Nancy Lee wins an art contest and a scholarship, but suddenly she is forced to face the drawback and injustice by being a Negro American in the modern civilization.
Nancy Lee appears as a hard-working and persistent girl. She is described as a talented and ambitious young lady, “You have been an excellent student, Nancy.” (p. 30 line 41) The word “excellent” is a strong adjective, that empathizes the fact, that she practically is the ideal American citizen except from her skin color. At first Nancy Lee is quite gullible. This is clearly expressed in the last sentence of the speech, that she was supposed to deliver, “… our American dream of ‘Liberty and justice for all!’” This extract shows Nancy’s naivety through positive nouns. The word “dream” is for an example related to hope. It is fair to say, that Nancy Lee develops throughout the story, since her view about the American dream and justice for all Americans changes. This iniquitous experience whets her appetite for gaining success and the faith in the American dream. The fact that Nancy did not succumb but kept on fighting for her dreams and justice makes her a persevering and strong-minded character.
