During the early 20th century, many people from around the world who lives in poor conditions come to America in hopes of a brighter tomorrow, and better opportunities for themselves and for their children. Even when they must face discrimination and prejudices, that is a risk they have to take. That is true for Nancy Lee, the main character in the short story, “One Friday Morning” by Langston Hughes. She’s talented and does everything right, yet when she finally reaches one of her goals of winning the Artist Club Award, it got taken back. Nancy knows that things don’t come easy, but now she also knows just how tough and unfair life can be. But she’s not ready to give up.
Characterization of Nancy Lee Johnson:
Nancy Lee Johnson is a very passionate girl. She is determined to become an artist and enroll in an artist school despite being a colored person. Luckily, she is liked by a lot of people, her classmates, and her teachers. “She especially likes her art teacher Miss Dietrich,” Miss Dietrich had taught Nancy Lee how to paint spring, people and a breeze on what was only a plain white piece of paper…”.
This shows that Nancy is passionate about learning new ways to paint to improve her craft and her chances of winning the Artist Club Award. Miss Dietrich sees that Nancy had talent and helped her a lot. Nancy has her roots from Africa and knows that she might face discrimination and other prejudices. Despite that, she keeps moving forward in order to achieve her dream of becoming an artist. Even when she gets her prize withdrawn, she doesn’t lose heart. She sees a new opportunity to continue her hard work to improve herself and her skills in painting. “This is the land we must take. “She thinks, this tells us that both her faith in the country and her hope in herself, has not been dwindled by the defeat. And that she is ready to go on.
