A new interview with Billy the Kid, shows a new side of the well-known American old west gunfighter.
Henry McCarty was born in New York City on September 17 1859. After Henry’s father died, his mother, his younger brother and he moved to Indianapolis. In Indianapolis Henry’s mother found a new husband, but unfortunately Henry’s mother had gotten tuberculosis, and the climate did not agree with her, so they had to move around until she died in 1874.
“After my mother died, things didn’t really work out with my stepfather or in school, so I moved in with Mrs. Sarah Brown in Silver City. But life in Silver City was violent. The men carried guns, and some gambled and drank too much.
After some time, I began to believe only fools worked hard for money.”
Living in Silver City left a mark on Henry, and he started making some bad choices. He started stealing. At first he stole some butter and sold it in a store. The sheriff soon found out about it and punished him by giving him a spanking.
But one day, Henry was convicted of stealing some clothes from a Chinese laundry, and was sent to jail.
