When browsing the web as most of us do, it’s almost impossible not to see something about the heavily discussed topic ‘Brexit’. Britain officially joined the European community of nations in 1975. A few decades later, in 2013, David Cameron, former prime minister promised a national referendum on European Union membership with the idea of settling the question once and for all. The options of the referendum would be ‘Remain’ or ‘Leave’, and Mr. Cameron was convinced that the ‘Remain’ option would win. But when the votes were counted, surprisingly 52% voted leave and 48% voted remain. But who voted for what, and what happens next?
This big question lead to a lot of frustration around the world, chaos began and people needed answers. How is Britain going to continue exporting and importing goods, what are we going to do with Northern Ireland and Irish border, which has caused so much miseries and conflicts for decades between Catholics and Unionists. But what Britain seems to have forgot is especially the younger generations voice. Only 40% of people over 60 voted remain, in comparison, around 73% of young people under 24 voted to Bremain because of all the pros that existed being part of the EU, the most important and valued of all, freedom of movement, which meant easy accessible work and studying opportunities in Europe. The difference in the voters age, truly shows a tendency of older people being more likely to vote leave rather than remain. Now that the surprising referendum took place, the young people of Britain are left behind with a feeling of betrayal and a stolen future. Whether Brexit ends with a bad deal scenario or, even worse, no deal scenario, economists have no doubt that the young and the low skilled, unfortunately are going to pay the biggest price of leaving the EU. This is because they in the future will inherit the post-Brexit world and bear the responsibility of making it work to best degree that is possible. The more than 2 year old and still ongoing Brexit debate, leaves us with more questions such as, what options are left for the future of the young people?
