Parents have very different views on upbringing. But common to most parent is, that they want their children the best. Which values parents bring up their children with is various. Different parent-values could be; trust, understanding and high expectations. Last-mentioned, is something the main character in the short story, The Shinning Mountain, by Alison Fell operates a lot with in his daughters upbringing for good and bad.
The Shining Mountain is a modern fairy tale about a famous mountaineer who wants his daughter to be just as tough, proud and strong as he is. She can’t be like the other ordinary girls in Scotland. She must be extraordinary. The father named his daughter Pangma-La after The Shinning Mountain, so she would stand tall and be proud. However, Pangma-La didn’t felt good about the name, quite much the reverse, she cried since she got teased because of here strange name. But then her father just scolded her and told her; he gave her the name, so she would stand tall, be proud and so she wouldn’t be like all the other ordinary girls in Scotland. “So Pangma-La dried her tears and vowed never to be ordinary and disappoint him” (s. 19 l. 1-2). In this quotations its clear that Pangma-La only stops crying because she is afraid to disappoint his father, and not because she really is happy.
