”When parents and doctores disagree on what futile means” -By Alice Park

July 13th 2017

The Charline Gard case is an international case about 11 moths old Charlie Matthew William Gard, who is in the eye of thousands of citizens including the Pope and the Presicent. Charlie was born with a rare mitochondrial depletion syndrome (MDDS) that renders his cells, unabel to pull energy from his body. The disorder has no treatment and it usually causes death in infancy, but for now it has left Charlie with a alot of side effects, including parts of his brain so damaged the he can’t breath or hear on his own.

He has been living the majority of his life at London’s Great Ormond Hospital, a national health service children hospital, in intensive-care relying on machines to keep him alive.

Charlies parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard acknoledge Charlies precius medically state, but put their hope into neurologist Michio Hirano in New York who has been working on an experimental therapy treatment with MDDS patients. If the surgery would come out succesfull, it would possibly only get him a littel bit better, he would never recover completely and it would probably only let him stay alive for a short period of time. But Michio agreed with the Ormond Hospital to give Charlie the treetment, founded by the national health service, but shortly after this agreement; Charlie had a seizures that caused brain damaged, and therefore they woudn’t give him any further tretments because it would be futile and might go tough even more suffering.
