This is a short story written by the author Courtney Jones. It begins with the narrator telling us that she is pregnant and that she can no longer tolerate onions because of it. She also tells that she works in the cardiac care unit as an administrative assistant. It seems that she is not very forth coming. She also describes herself as whimsical. Her boss is a man named James Soleander. He is a heart doctor. He seems to be a very insecure and forgetful man, since he can easily forget that his pen is in his pocket or his beeper is attached to his belt. He is also very fond of cashmere. James is also revealed to be the father of the narrator’s child, but she cannot get herself to tell him about it, in hopes that he would notice it himself. Sadly it does not appear that he has noticed. The narrator goes out for lunch and orders her favourite sandwich; unfortunately it contains onions, so she ends up paying for it when she gets back to the office. The baby lets her know that she will not eat the onions. Just as she throws the onions out, James enters the room and can almost instantaneously smell the onions. He jumps up onto her desk and starts talking to her about these onions, how they are his favourite vegetable. The narrator has a hard time telling if he is flirting with her or not. She is still disappointed that he cannot see that their baby is inside her. It is at this point she reveals that it wasn’t just a casual thing that the two of them hooked up. They had an affair. James is married and his wife is an anaesthesiologist and works on the floor above them. James appears to be happy, which confuses the narrator. He has a beautiful and sweet wife that leaves him flowers at work. James wasn’t attracted to her like he was to his wife. The narrator suffers from an irregular heartbeat. Apparently James is very attracted to irregularity, “True beauty lies in nature’s mistakes.” as he says. So they more or less did “it” right there in his office, listening to her heart the whole time.
