The main character in the novel “in country” is a girl called Samantha Hughes, but everybody calls her Sam, she is 17 nearly 18-years-old. Sam lives in Hopewell, Kentucky. Sam does not have a lot of money (P.69, L.17-18). Sam once worked at burger boy, where she also liked to hang out, but she could never imagine herself working at burger boy again. Sam thinks that her face is to round and that she has ugly teeth (P.39, L. 5-6). She got big lobes with a lot of holes for her earrings.
Sam is a girl with a lot of bizarre ideas in her head; it can make it hard for her to enjoy things, that’s why she loves to run because it makes her feel free, she also really enjoy listening to the Beatles and Bruce Springsteen. Sam has a crush on one of the veterans, that Emmett hangs out with he is called Tom Hudson.
Sam just graduated high school, and she had already been accepted at both the university of Kentucky and Murray state university. Her mother wants her to attend the university of Kentucky, but then she has to move to Lexington, which she is very against, she is considering to attend at Murray State because it is nearby, and that will allow her to watch over Emmett, she feels some kind of responsibility. Now she is spending the summer traveling away from home and considering her options. Sam thinks that everything feels more real than ever when she is traveling on the road in her car, she is very proud of her car.
