The short story ”Be here now” by Miguel Syjuco is about a couple who live in their own new house. The short story´s main character has finally returned home to his fiancée, Jenna, after having been sent out to war zone. We really do not get a lot of information about what the main character does, we only get to know that he is a press photographer in Afghanistan where American troops are stationed.

The whole story takes place in their new house, and we are told that they are unpacking their things in the start of the short story. A few times in the story, we see that the main character looks back at some different occasions in his life. One of the occasions he is first describing is the time where he was not home and he talked to Jenna about their new home. He was really excited to see their new home, and asked Jenna to send pictures of the new home so he could also be a part of the decision. He describes that they were talking on Skype when it is bedtime for Jenna and dawn for him and that it was wonderful to do. He says that these brief moments of connectivity with Jenna grounded him, and for the first time in his life he felt the pull between where he was and was not (page 2 line 5-6).
