Life is sort of a wide-ranging wonder or perhaps struggle, and for many people very hard to define. We walk around, for averagely 80 years, desperately seeking what we think is the perfect life – or in many cases, what others may see as the perfect life.
Life brings us tons of opportunities, one more enticing than the other. We are constantly in places where decisions have to be made, and we find ourselves wondering whether we are making the right ones. Our opinion of the right decisions, are build on society’s judgement. Especially the social media is a very essential element in how individuals compare ourselves to others, and we can be tough judges to both others, but especially also ourselves. Some more or less extreme events can change our way of seeing and living life, in both negative and positive ways.
The short story “Be Here Now” from 2012 by Miguel Syjuco, portrays a man’s fate and thoughts in the wake of his participation in a terrible war, and the following consequences to his life with his fiancée Jenna.
The story starts with in media res, which is a characteristic feature in short stories, and we are thrown directly into the lives of the characters, without any knowledge of the situation. The main character is an obvious first person narrator, and we are not familiar with his name. We are therefore focused on his thoughts and feelings, which is very dominating through the story.
