Abstract This paper examines the development in the American foreign affairs, and investigates whether the US can preserve its position as a superpower in the international system in a longterm perspective. The first part of the paper is an account of the American self-perception, and how it´s expressed in the Monroe-, Truman and Bush doctrines, which all has been analysed. The second part is an investigation of how the United States' foreign policy and how the country´s role in the international system can be expounded. In this part there has been uses relevant theories to do the investigation. Eventually the background of the changes in the American foreign policy has been discussed, together with an estimation of whether the US can preserve its predominant position in the world community. It takes a financial and military dominance to be the hegemonical force in the world community, and this position, which the US have had since the end of the cold war, is threatened by the ricing economical power China. The world order will in a manageable number of years change to at bipolar system, unless the US is successful in revising China´s financial power.
