The story is about a guy named Gerry Conlon. He is from a town called Belfast in Northern Ireland. The story centralizes his family, friends and his acquaintances. Besides that, it centralizes one huge dilemma, which is the main focus in the film. His family, friends and the man himself gets wrongly convicted of bombing two pubs at the outside of London. Northern Ireland was in a massive feud known as ’The Troubles’. The feud was divided into Protestants and the Catholics. More precisely between the IRA Irish Republican Army) and the colonialist brits.
The conflict was active between 1968 and 1998.
Enough about the backstory, now to the summary. It started with Gerry moving to London after some issues with the authority because, he accidentally started a riot. On the way to London he met his old friend Paul Hill, and they quickly became close again and bonded. They then moved to London and lived at a house full of hippies. They started using their money on drugs, so they quickly ran out of money. To earn money, they robbed houses. One day he decides to go back to Belfast and visit his family. Then at night at his family’s house, the police came and arrested him. They brought him to the police station and took him into custody for 7 days with no right justification. They justice system was very corrupt at the time, so they authorities was just looking for a scapegoat for everything. For them, Gerry was the perfect scapegoat because he had the opposite religious view compared to them. The thing they wanted the most, was for someone to confess the crime of bombing two British pubs. To make him confess the crime he certainly didn’t commit, they used all kinds of torture on him. He was suffocated, beaten up, physically broken and humiliated.
