'Brokeback Mountain': forbudt kærlighed og sociale normer

In English class, we watched a movie called Brokeback Mountain. It is about two cowboys in the sixties named Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist. They end up falling in love, and having an affair. They hook up in secret on Brokeback Mountain. Ennis and Jack had a great relationship and when they were together, time stood still. In normal circumstances, at that time, men did not necessarily talk about their feelings, but after their boozing night on Brokeback, Jack and Ennis really got to know each other - also intimately. After that night, Ennis married his longtime fiancée Alma Beers and became a father of two girls. Jack meat Lureen Newsome at a rodeo event and shortly after their meeting they got married and parents to a boy. Through the years, Jack and Ennis only saw each other occasionally. The movie ends in a heartbreaking, emotional tragedy where Jack was allegedly beat to death because he was gay. They have to overcome the obstacles such as their families, social norms and the fact that they live in different states. The society makes it very hard to love each other. The ending, where jack dies, is very important to the story since it is not a “happy ever after” fairytale nor a sugarcoated romantic Hollywood movie; it is a close to reality, raw, hash and tragic and that gives the film a great perspective. The fact that he dies or rather the way he dies is so real and that gives us a good image of how the conditions where back then and somewhere still are.
