Michelle Obama’s speech at the Food Marketing is made by the first lady, Michelle Obama, the 18th September 2013, in the State Dining Room in the White House. Her speech is about how we should improve and develop some healthier food choices for both parents, but also kids. Because a lot of people deal with obesity in the western world especially in the Unites States of America. She wants to achieve better life standards for kids and parents.
She achieves this by using figures of speech and establishing common ground with the main audience. By using appeal forms like pathos, ethos and logos. When she establishes common ground with the audience she mentions how she has 2 children of her own and that she has been in that situation as well as every other mother in the world or at least can relate to. She mentions that her and Barack: “Do their best to limit their daughters’ TV time.” Because of all the commercials and ads on there. Here she speaks to the big firms by mentioning “commercials and ads” she indirectly puts focus on their part in this problem. She thanks her audience:” And I want to thank all of you for joining us today” (line 19) She do this for the use of getting on the same level with them and making them feel better about them being there. Another example of her using rhetorical devices is when she says:” I just wanted to take a moment to express my sincere heartbreak over Monday’s tragedy” (line 10) This is another example of her establishing common ground and the use of pathos. She keeps addressing the parents, lawyers and big firms that are present at her speech:” we’re eager to hear more from everyone in this room” (Line 26) she accomplishes to make them feel part of the project in an indirectly way by using the word:” everyone” So she already makes them think that they are a part of the project, even before they began the discussing about participating.
