Obama makes her case clear, she wants people to go out of their way to vote. She wants people to vote for Joe Biden. The circumstances of the speech are at the Democratic National Convention 2020, where she is standing her own house. The background is blurred in the video, but it looks like she is standing in her living room. The fact that the living room looks like a casual home, makes her appear more down to earth, which appeals to the pathos of the audience. She also appeals to pathos by making it clear that she recognizes the sacrifices, pain, and promise the people of America have to offer. Obama helps Biden appeal to the people’s pathos as well. She tells his story, the pain he has been through, the grind he has been through, the kindness and passion he has to offer. She sheds light on the personal and humane side of Biden. People can relate to these personal anecdotes and the losses he has been through. She uses ethos by being one of the most beloved and well-known women around the world. She also gains credibility and trustworthiness by seeming completely honest: “So let me be 2 as honest and clear as I possibly can. Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country” (ll. 43- 44). She describes the state of the nation and mentions the Black Lives Matter movement and COVID-19. She recognizes and acknowledges the two biggest problems in the country in an honest manner, appealing to both pathos and ethos. Her honesty appeals to ethos. She also shows her kindheartedness for the children in the country by saying: “But right now, kids in this country are seeing what happens when we stop requiring empathy of one another.” (ll. 15-16), this appeals to pathos. Time and again she brings up statistics to gain credibility, this appeals to logos. It appeals to logos because she makes sense out of her statements, by adding numbers to visualize her statements: “When my husband left office with Joe Biden at his side, we had a record-breaking stretch of job creation. We'd secured the right to health care for 20,000,000 people” (ll. 36-37). She also makes use of a quote from John Lewis and then rephrases it seconds later: “…not just feeling, but doing; not just for ourselves or our kids, but for everyone, for all our kids.” (ll. 40-41). The quote and her rephrasing appeals to pathos and logos, her compassion for all kids appeal to pathos, and the logic of acting when something is wrong appeals to the viewers' logos. The intention of the speech is to show people the true colors of the nation and make them vote for Biden. She intends to make eligible people vote. She wants to show the weight of expectations, the pressure, the requirements, and the power of becoming president: “As I've said before, being president doesn't change who you are; it reveals who you are.” (l. 28) Having been the first lady while Barack Obama had his presidential time, she knows the difficulty and the job's requirements. She also keeps on making contraries: “They can start wars or broker peace. They can summon our better angels or awaken our worst instincts.” (ll. 25-26), by saying this she shows the importance of voting for the right president. Obama held a speech in 2016 and reused one of her lines: “When they go low, we go high” in a rephrased manner: ”…going high is the only thing that works...” (l. 31) She wants the audience to take on the challenge together, and not let demagogues divide this nation further. This also shows she doesn’t go back on her word, strengthening her trustworthiness even more. With this, she intends to make people work together and rebuild the nation to become even stronger. Obama engages the audience by using the forms of appeal. She starts by addressing the suffering people have been through. She then moves on and shows her elicit feelings of sadness and sorrow, becoming vulnerable and honest with the audience. She also shows her anger 3 towards the current state of America. During the speech, she never loses eye contact with the camera, and the passion, pain, and emotion in her body language and eyes are undeniable. Her delivery style is also very powerful and emphatic. Obama draws in the audience because she knows what they are going through and have the viewers hooked. In conclusion, she seems to have touched and connected with the audience at home, even in these cruel times, she manages to come through. I believe she succeeds in getting her message across. She shows the importance of voting, the importance of going high, and the importance of having empathy. She acknowledges the opponents and problems along the way but still keeps a focus on the future of the country’s children. She ends her speech with the most important message: “…we have got to do everything we can to elect my friend, Joe Biden, as the next president of the United States.” (ll. 44-45). But in the end, only time can tell if she succeeds, because the race is far from over.
