” Ray the Rottweiler” is following a woman called Tess and her son Josh. The story is based on Tess and her interactions with her neighbour who is called Ray the Rottweiler. The community they live in has a lot of prejudices about Ray and a lot of rumours about him is spread around, for example that he killed his wife and buried her and the fact that he’s kind of a freak. Tess can’t help sympathize with him because she can relate to the way he is treated because her son Josh has an allergy and has red patches of skin on his face, and people look at him with hostile attitude too.
The short story circles around the topic social exclusion and it tells the story through Ray and Josh.
The narrator in the short story is a first-person narrator and is called Tess. She recently moved to Black Covert Cottage with her husband Adam and her son Josh. They moved because they didn’t like the city and because it’s better for Josh’s allergy.
Tess describes herself as “…not the home-made biscuit type, or the sociable-calls-on neighbour type”, but she keeps on visiting Ray. Even though the community has a lot of bad thoughts about him and she visits him because she is curious about him. She talks to Ray about her problems, for example that Josh doesn’t attend school. She seems like a good mother, but yet very overprotective. Even though the story tells us in the end that Josh can run, she pushes him in a pushchair, and she doesn’t like the thought of him going to school because she is afraid that someone would bully him.
