The narrator starts a business with her brother’s best friend named Eugene. All three of them are in high school. The narrator feels a special bond with Eugene since they share the same opinions about Franconia. Her brother is aware of their business but is caught up in his science project, where he is studying mice’s behaviour. One-time Eugene forgets he has to write a paper, so the narrator ends up writing it all in one night. The next morning, they end up fighting about the paper in school in front of the vice-principal. They both get a suspension. Therefore, Eugene will no longer be able to attend Harvard in the autumn and the narrator will have to spend the entire summer at school. A few days later Eugene disappears with all the money they earned from their shared business. He leaves without his pet owl. The narrator then decides to take care of the owl. The owl kills all Jason’s project mice and it also starts losing all its feathers.
Analytical essay
The short story is a first-person narration which means that the narrator is also a character in story and all the actions are told through his/her point of view. We do not know the gender of the narrator, but we can assume that the narrator is a girl because the story hint at a possible romance between the narrator and Eugene, “It wasn’t so much that Eugene and I liked each other, or that there was any possibility of romance between us”. (ll. 2-3, p. 1)
