Gender Roles in the Romantic Period

Throughout history have times changed. Gender roles are one of the biggest changes. People still argue about gender roles to this day today, especially here in the West Women do not act or are treated in the same way anymore, same for men to some degree. Today, in most of the Western part of the world we believe in equal rights for both genders. I want to discuss how gender roles changed, based on comparing today with the Romantic Period from the various material

Jane Austen (1775- 1817) is a famous British novelist. In her novels, she especially writes about women’s role and how they are forced to get married because of social status, wealth etc.1 Women’s role is very clear according to Jane Austen's novel, Pride and Prejudice. The Bennets is very interested in getting their daughters married, especially Mrs. Bennet. She is totally obsessed with just getting one of their daughters married to Mr. Bingley, due to his extraordinary wealth.2 Mrs. Bennet doesn’t even mention anything else about Mr. Bingley, besides the facts that he is young and of course his wealth. But worst of all, it does not matter to her which daughter that should marry him, just one of them. At this point, this really shows what women’s role used to be back in the romantic period. The best option for your daughter was to marry her off to the wealthiest man with the highest social status as possible, for the sake of your own status and her social and financial security. Compared to now day, it shows us how crazy we used to be, and this is not how we want women to be treated because it is completely against their will. By the way, besides this best option, women had few other options, which were taking care of other children if you became too old to get married. For example, working at an orphanage. The worst and last option was being forced into prostitution to survive, unfortunately, this happened to a lot of women because they ran out of opportunities. Remember, overall is Mrs. Bennet not a bad person for trying to force it, she was just trying to do the best for her children, do not blame her for all this, but blame the society, and the gender roles of the time.
