There are several themes you can focus on in your analysis and interpretation of ‘The Hurt Man’. For example you can concentrate upon life experiences, existentialism, life and death parents and children, the western society, etc. But I have chosen to focus on the description of the women’s role in society.
To think about the development of humanity has always left us with gaping thoughts, and at times even repulsive behavior. One of the major issues concerning the previous view on mankind is how the whole family structure has been under extensive change. The description of women’s role in society has especially been discussed and debated. You do not have to go far back in time to be witness to a society where women were treated differently from what we are used to today.
The excerpt from the short story begins in media res. We are giving an introduction to the central figure, Mat Feltner, to the time and to the settings. Mat Feltner lives with his family in Port Williams, which consists of two rows of dwellings along a thoroughfare, there is too small for anybody to call it a street. We get the impression that everybody knows each other and that life goes on in its own pace. It is noteworthy that the town consists of a road which leads from the school to the graveyard. The town then becomes a symbol of life; from childhood to death.
