What a Character The Hollow Kingdom
My favourite book of all time is The Hollow Kingdom, which is written by Clare B. Dunkle. It is the first book of The Hollow Kingdom trilogy. The protagonist is Kate, a young woman who is forced to marry the goblin king, Marak. The story takes place in 1815, on a country estate called Hollow Hill, whom she has inherited after her dead mother. She used to live in the city with her father and her little sister Emily but after her father's passing she is left without a home and is therefore forced to go to Hollow Hill, where her uncle lives. He is very infuriated by the fact that a ‘city girl’, who has no idea of the history of her family, owns the mansion while he has to lease his own family's house. Her and her little sister Emily, does not live in the actual Hollow Hill, but in the garden residence with her greataunts, both of them very kind and loving, but does not understand Kate. For thousands of years, young women have been vanishing from the estate and nearby village, never to be seen again. Now Kate and Emily, young girls of noble descent, have come to live at Hallow Hill. They have no idea of the lands dreadful heritage until the meet the goblins who live under the ‘hollow hill’. One of the first goblins they meet is Marak Sixfinger, the goblin king who intends to make Kate, his wife. He is trying to get to know her before kidnapping her but ends up leaving her scared of him. After much resistance, Kate offers herself to Marak in exchange for his help in rescuing Emily from their cousin who has kidnapped her. She thinks that it was Marak who took her sister to force her to marry him. After the rescue, both girls are taken by the goblins to their kingdom. Kate has long golden hair, which is something Marak notices the first time he sees her, and she is tall and is very fair skinned, and sensible, but strong in her own way. She is unselfish, kind and does whatever she believes is right. This appeals to me because there aren't that many books with a strong heroine. Kate loves the outdoors, and can't stand the thought of never seeing the stars again, which is going to happen when she goes with Marak. Later in the book, it is explained, that it is because of her elf blood. In the end, she comes to terms with the fact her husband does not look exactly like she would have wanted, but later realises that she wouldn't trade him for anything: She loves him.
