In the text “A Journey” we meet Mary, a mother both taking care of her paralyzed husband and her seriously depressed son. The main story takes place during a drive home from the hospital. Mary and David, her son, is on their way home after David’s 7 months admission. While driving through the dark night, Mary tries to converse with David but his illness makes it very difficult and he becomes almost hostile towards her, instead Mary sometimes drift away into her own mind and look back at different situations and events of her life. The beginning of the text is one of those flashbacks.

The story starts out ‘in medias res’ with a flashback back to when David was only four years old. The David the author has decided to introduce us to first, is a striking contrast to the one we meet later on in the text. As a four-year-old David was very curious and vivacious.

“He must have been about four then, going through the stage, she remembered, of asking questions and wanting to know how everything worked and why.”

But the David we meet on the drive home would rather avoid any questions or any other form of dialog, therefore Mary has renamed his illness and he is no longer suffering from depression, but he is instead suffering from silence.
