The story takes place over 22 years. It begins when the narrator is five years old, where she talks about, how she hates the name Jesse, because it reminds her of her drunk uncle named Jesse, who killed himself in front of his wife
In the second paragraph the narrator is now 8 years old, and her father and his coworker, Jesse, are introduced. The father and Jesse work together at a nearby mill. The narrator in the story is very fond of both her father and Jesse, even though Jesse is black, so he cannot come into the house.
