There was a time where black people were looked at in a bad way. They were seen as if they were less worthy than white people. They were of another race, and they had another skin color. There were a lot of racism. This is really shown in the story “Jesse” by Joy Boothe.
Already from when the narrator of the text, was really young, still a small child. She was taught, by her grandmother, that black people or “niggers”, were people you should stay away from. She was really against white people interacting with black people.
This is shown in the following paragraph. “Granny has brought me up on stories about what nigger men do to little white girls if they get the chance.”
In that paragraph we can really se in what way the grandmother, to the narrator, sees black people. And it is not in a good way. She does something that we still do to this day. We hear all the bad things about some group of people, like black people, and we think that is how all the people from that group is.
Although the narrator’s grandmother has everything against black people, the narrator’s father, sees them in a different way.
