Racism and racial segregation have been a problem for many years. Throughout history large numbers of people have been treated badly solely based on their race or ethnic group!

In ”Jesse” a short story written by Joy Boothe, and published in 2012, we read about the main character from she is five to twenty-seven years old. The text talks about her upbringing as a white girl living in a society with extreme discrimination towards black people. The exact date it was published was on Martin Luther King’s birthday in 2012. It was to honour him and what he has achieved.

The author takes us back to 1957-1989. The time difference is not huge, however there have been many changes in society when it comes to racism, and it shows. The extreme racial segregation in the story does not only have to do with the year it takes place, but also location. The story is based in southern USA which is to this day still known for racism and little equality, despite it no longer being systemic and nearly as harsh as in the story.

It is also worth mentioning that our main character was 11 years old in 1963, the year of the speech “I have a dream” by Martin Luther King.
