The youth is a time of confusion. It can be described as the worst of times and the best of times. It is often in this period you can experience an identity crisis. Who am I? Who do I want to be? And with expectations from family, society, and most importantly yourself, these questions aren’t easy to answer. The short story She’s the bomb written by T. Coraghessan Boyle in 2017, demonstrates through themes such as self-realization, identity, and egoism, a teenage girl difficulties with the transition from youth to adulthood.

The short story is told by a 3. Person omniscient narrator. Through the narrator we hear the protagonist, Hailey Phleger’s thoughts and feelings. We learn why Hailey acts the way she does, which makes it easier for the reader to identify with Hailey. By using this type of narrator, the story is told from a more objective angle, with a more critical view on Hailey’s actions and her as a character.

She’s the bomb starts in media res, where the reader immediately gets thrown in to the action, to make the story more intruding. The first part of the story narrates where and when the story occurs. This gives the reader an idea of what type of novel they are about to peruse.
