Analyse af 'How Hip-Hop Holds Blacks Back'

Music can change our mood really fast, if we listen to the lyrics carefully. It is no lie that it affects our feelings but does it also has an influence on our actions? This is what John H- McWhorter discusses in his essay “How Hip-Hop Holds Blacks Back”. Briefly the essay is about how harmful rap and hip-hop are to the black community.

The title is some of a tongue twister but it actually makes sense. McWhorter deliberates how hip-hop supports the cry-racism crowd. He expresses how far black people have come in society and how successful they are exposed on television. Then he point out some lyrics from some hip-hop songs created by black artist. He contends that black people play victims in rap and hip-hop, which have a mistaken impact on the youth. McWhorter gives an example, which supports his claim, where he tells us about an incident he once experienced. One day he had lunch in KFC and there were eight African-American boys next to him. They were really loud and acted discourteously. McWhorter emphasizes that these young boys were listening to some hard-edged rap, which was concerned with dislike of authority.

The conclusion of this strange happening is that McWhorter claims that the young boys disdainful behavior was caused by the music they were listening to. This makes sense if we take into account how fast music affects us and how easy it is to have an influence on the youth.
