Not being born as a regular child has a flood of consequences, and in this particular case, fatal ones too. Even though you may appear normal, people will still judge you. Nicola Barker tries to describe an “abnormal” boy’s attempt to fit into a condemning society in the short story “Back to Front”.
The story could take place in any Western country, as it seems there is a well-functioning school system and good hospital facilities, but there is a mention of “H. Samuels”, which is only located in Great Britain, so I am assuming this is where the action plays out as well. It seems like an ordinary family, not wealthy, but not poor either, so my guess would be that they are somewhere in the lower-middle-class, perhaps in the middle-class, but it is hard to say, because there are not many indications as to what sort of environment they live in.
The main person is Nick. He was born with all his organs in the opposite side of normal people. His outside appearance is perfectly normal though, but that has not helped to make his life easier:
