Summary of 'I Have a Job for You'

Yancy is a boy who lives with his mother and his stepfather. One day Yancy wants to stay home so he fake a sickness, his mother fells for it but his stepfather is curries. His stepdad always says “I have a job for you” and Yancy sometimes imitate it as a joke and that makes his mother laugh. Yancy’s stepfather doesn’t believe that Yancy is sick so he tells him to go get the mail that is at the end of a half mile driveway with rutted gravel and it takes fifteen minutes to walk all the way.

Yancy decides to fake a blackout for his mother but ends up getting seen by a cop that pulls up the driveway to Yancy, the cop thought that Yancy might have been in a drive-by shooting or a hit and run accident. Yancy gets to talk with the cop for a while and at the end the cop drives Yancy up to his house and gets out to talk to his stepfather. The story ends by Yancys stepfather asking if he is blacking outing again.
