Human beings need to be loved and accepted by someone. If there is a lack of these two things you will feel empty inside and try to fill up the emptiness. But what if this effort triggers your mental health?
This feeling of emptiness is especially very common among old people. Some of them knit to escape from this emptiness and others search for hillsides. The first one is probably more usual, but we witness the second one in the short story “Land of the Lost”.
An old woman’s life develops from an ordinary everyday life to a wannabe Sherlock Holmes movie. The main character works as a cashier and hears about a girl’s missing hillside. The short story tells about the woman’s aspiration to find the girl.
We know that the main character is an old woman, because she has two grown up sons who moved out. The author also tells the reader that the woman accepts that she is too old to do what she is doing. The main character tries to convince her son that she is only searching for the girl to help the parents out. She attempts to gain sympathy by asking if he wouldn’t do the same thing if it was his daughter. But later in the short story she acknowledges that the reason for her search is that no one other than her dog and the girl’s parents need her. So the only things she wants are to be valued and loved and because no one gives her that, she searches for it herself.
