London, England, Hospital St. Bartholomew, Winter of 1850 -
Screams were echoing through the hallways of the hospital. The foul smell of blood was lingering in the cold air as a woman gave birth to a little girl. Bloody nurses were running in and out of the small room as they carried towels and bowls with water.
The screams only got louder and louder as the woman struggled to give birth to her still unborn child. The midwife laid more towels under her as she lost more and more blood. As the child finally took her first breath the room filled itself with a deafening silence. Her mother laid pale on the bed as her last breath escaped her.
Two elderly nurses took the small child and cleaned her as the others took care of the dead mother still laying in a now red colored bed.
“What shall we do now?” one of the nurses said as they looked at the little newborn whom hadn’t said a word yet. It was quite rare that a newborn didn’t cry or make a sound after being born.
“We probably need to send her to an orphanage,” The other nurse picked the child up and laid her into a white crib. “Would you like to name her?”
