Apartheid was the South African policies about racial segregation. It all started, when the National Party of South Africa gained power. They were an all-white government, so that was terrible for the non-white people (including nelson and his family). They would be forced to live in separate areas from whites, and they weren’t allowed to use the same public areas. Example public toilets were separated. It was very common to see a toilet, which said, “whites only” and things like that. The contact between the two groups of people where very limited.
