Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, born 18 July 1918 in Transkei, South Africa. Is a former South African president and was one of the country's leading anti-apartheid activists. He spent his childhood in the kingdom Tembu before he began a legal career.
As a young law student was Mandela mixed into the political resistance against white denial of political, social and economic rights for blacks. He joined the African National Congress in 1942.
In 1961, Mandela, leader of the ANC's armed wing. In August 1962 he was arrested and imprisoned for five years for illegal travel abroad and incitement to strike.
